5-1 Wolves lead way for FA Cup underdogs

THREE Premier League outfits were dumped out of the FA Cup by lower-league clubs in Saturday’s third round.

Stoke were stunned 2-0 at home by Sky Bet Championship club Wolves thanks to goals from Helder Costa and Matt Doherty who helped to land a 5-1 upset, while Derby downed West Brom 2-1 at the Hawthorns.

Matthew Phillips put Albion in front before Darren Bent equalised and Tom Ince notched the Rams’ winner. Derby had been 4-1 to progress at the first attempt and 7-2 shots Millwall bashed Bournemouth 3-0 at the Den.

Cherries coach Eddie Howe made 11 changes and his makeshift side were ripped to pieces by the Lions, who qualified for the fourth round with goals from Steve Morison, Shaun Cummings and Shane Ferguson.

The biggest casualties were Everton. The Toffees, who had been only 25-1 to win the FA Cup, lost 2-1 at home to Leicester.

Arsenal survived a scare at Preston before fighting back for a 2-1 win. Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giround grabbed second-half goals for the Gunners.

Wayne Rooney equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United’s goalscoring record with the opener in a 4-0 win over Reading at Old Trafford.

National League side Lincoln twice led at Ipswich but had to settle for a replay in a 2-2 draw and Sutton are also in the hat following a goalless stalemate with AFC Wimbledon.

They are the non-league teams representatives in Monday’s draw after Stourbridge, Eastleigh and Barrow suffered defeats.
