Citizens scuppered by late strike in Munich
MANCHESTER CITY and Chelsea both failed to win on a bad night in Europe for Premier League clubs.
English champions City were 9-2 to win away at German kings Bayern Munich and looked to be heading for a valuable point with game goalless heading into the final minutes.
However, a superb strike from Bayern defender Jerome Boateng gave his side a 1-0 victory and Bayern are 4-1 to lift the trophy.
Chelsea were just 1-3 to get their campaign off to a winning start against Schalke but had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Didier Drogba started up front for the Blues with Diego Costa dropped to the bench, and Chelsea took the lead after 11 minutes when Cesc Fabregas linked up with Eden Hazard on the edge of the penalty area and drilled a low shot into the net.
But Schalke’s Klaas-Jan Huntelaar levelled things up just after the hour mark, and not even the introduction of Costa could help Chelsea find a winner. But the Blues will still be confident of qualifying after group rivals Maribor and Sporting also drew 1-1.
Yasine Brahimi netted a hat-trick as Porto beat Bate Borisov 6-0, while Roma also had an easy night thrashing CSKA Moscow 5-1.
A Gerard Pique goal gave Barcelona a 1-0 win against Apoel Nicosia, and Lasse Schone’s equaliser earned Ajax a 1-1 draw against hotly-fancied PSV.
In the Championship, Nottingham Forest are top of the table after they beat struggling Fulham in a 5-3 thriller, leaving the Cottagers bottom with just one point after seven games.
Forest are 13-2 to win the title.
