City fail to seal Europa spot after Dortmund loss

MANCHESTER CITY’s European adventures are over for another season after they fell to a 1-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund last night and failed to reach the Europa League.

Julian Schieber’s second-half goal was enough for the German side to claim their fourth win of the Group D campaign, although a better head-to-head record than Real Madrid had already ensured they finished at the head of affairs. The Germans are 9-1 to win the competition with Betfred.

All eight qualifiers for the group stages were known from the four groups in action last night before a ball was kicked, but Arsenal will face one of the group winners after a 2-1 defeat to Olimpiakos meant the Gunners finished second to Schalke.

Paris St-Germain finished top of Group A after the big spenders beat Porto 2-1 in the French capital.

The Portuguese outfit were already assured of a place in the knockout stage where they will be joined by Group C winners Malaga, who drew 2-2 with Belgians Anderlecht, and Milan, who went through despite losing 1-0 at home to Zenit St Petersburg.

Champions League –best prices:  5-2 Barcelona (bet365, Betfred), 10-3 R Madrid (general), 7 B Munich (general), 9 B Dortmund (Betfred), 10 Man United (bet365), 16 Juventus (general), 20 Paris St-Germain (bet365), Shakhtar (general), 28 Arsenal (bet365), 40 bar.

Expert verdict
Surprise package Caen are not close to the summit through luck. Their amazing results will almost certainly dip but performances have been good enough to suggest they can get a draw at Monaco, who give away too many chances. The hosts allow an average of 13.6 shots per game – only bottom-of-the-table Troyes concede more.
