Eagles 5-4 to break hoodoo against Chelsea
CHELSEA are 4-6 favourites to lift the Europa League trophy on Wednesday night and continue Benfica’s 50-year barren run in Europe that dates back to a famous curse from a former manager.
When the Portuguese side won the European Cup in 1962 manager Bela Gutman asked for a pay rise but was turned down, so on leaving the club he declared: “Not in a hundred years from now will Benfica ever win a European Cup.”
Since that day they have reached five finals, the latest in 1990, and lost the lot and they also fell at the final hurdle of the 1983 Uefa Cup.
The Eagles are 5-4 to end the hoodoo against Chelsea.
