England start with fine 2-0 win in Switzerland
ENGLAND made a fine start to their European Championship campaign as they outperformed match odds of 21-10 to win 2-0 in Switzerland on Monday.
Danny Welbeck, who was a 10-1 shot to open the scoring, broke the deadlock on 59 minutes following a superb cross from Raheem Sterling and the new Arsenal man added a second late on.
The result eased the pressure which had been growing on under-fire manager Roy Hodgson and England are 16-1 with Betfred to win the competition.
It was unthinkable before the Swiss result that England would miss out on the tournament in France and it should be a stroll with the top two teams from each group automatically qualifying.
Claiming group honours is at the mercy of England now they have won away to their closest challengers with Ladbrokes quoting Hodgson’s men at 1-4 from a best-priced 8-11 to finish at the summit.
Bet365 rate England 7-1 to win all of their remaining qualifiers and 10-11 to remain unbeaten from a soft section.
In the other Group E matches Lithuania were 2-0 winners away to complete minnows San Marino, while Estonia surprised Slovenia with a 1-0 triumph.
