Everton left to fly the flag in Europa League

EVERTON will be Britain’s only representative in the last 16 of the Europa League as LIverpool, Tottenham and Celtic were all dumped out last night.

The Toffees made light work of seeing off Young Boys 7-2 on aggregate with a 3-1 win at Goodison Park and they are 12-1to win the competition with bet365.

But while two goals from Romelu Lukaku and another from Kevin Mirellas helped Roberto Martinez’s side progress, it was a miserable British story elsewhere.

Liverpool’s hopes of gaining a Europa League triumph as compensation for elimination from the Champions League were crushed as they suffered a penalty-shootout defeat to Besiktas.

The Reds were defending a 1-0 first-leg lead from a week ago but were stung by a Tolgay Arslan goal 18 minutes from time.

There were no further goals in extra-time and, after nine successful kicks in the shootout, Dejan Lovren blasted his penalty wide to sent the Turkish outfit through.

The Reds had been just 2-11 to  progress before last night’s game while Besiktas were available at 4-1 to qualify and were a general 2-1 to win in 90 minutes.

The Reds had been 11-1 third favourites for the competition yesterday morning.

Tottenham could not earn a  confidence boost for Sunday’s Capital One Cup final as they were dumped out by Fiorentina.

Second-half goals from Mario Gomez and Mohamed Salah earned a 2-0 victory for La Viola to put them through to the last 16 after they had earned a 1-1 draw at Spurs last week.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are 9-2 to beat Chelsea in Sunday’s final at Wembley, while Jose Mourinho’s Premier League leaders are 8-11 to claim the first domestic silverware of the season at Wembley.

Elimination means neither Liverpool or Tottenham will be able to qualify for the next season’s Champions League by winning the Europa League and will have to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Liverpool are a general 15-8 to achieve that while Spurs are 6-1 with Ladbrokes.

Celtic were also knocked out despite a brave display at Inter.

After a 3-3 draw at Parkhead last week, the Bhoys’ chances were not helped when defender Virgil van Dijk was sent off before the break.

Inter sealed their passage with a goal from Freddy Guarin two minutes from time.
