Herrera strongly denies match-fixing links

MANCHESTER UNITED midfielder Ander Herrera has denied any involvement in match-fixing after being linked with an ongoing investigation in Spain.

Herrera is among 41 players, coaches and directors named in the match-fixing probe.

He said: "I have never had and will never have anything to do with manipulating match results.

"If I am ever called to testify in any judicial hearing, I'll be happy to attend, as my conscience is clear.

"I love football and I believe in fair play, both on and off the pitch."

The prosecutors have alleged that €965,000 (£766,735) was paid to Levante players to lose their match against Real Zaragoza at the end of the 2010-11 campaign.

The result (Zaragoza won 2-1) helped Herrera's former club Zaragoza, now playing in Segunda, avoid relegation from La Liga.

Swansea winger Jefferson Montero has also been named in the investigation – he was playing for Levante at the time.

Former West Brom manager Steve Clarke has been appointed as Reading boss on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Clarke was available at 4-1 for the job on Monday, when Nigel Adkins was dismissed after a 6-1 loss at the hands of Birmingham. However, he was backed in to 1-20 to take the reins before the market was suspended. Reading are 16th in the Championship.
