Iceland 100-30 to freeze out England in last 16

ROY HODGSON has bemoaned England’s perceived bad luck at Euro 2016 but they got a huge slice of good fortune when Iceland were confirmed as England’s last-16 opponents as it looked certain the Three Lions would be heading for a difficult date with Portugal in Nice on Monday.

A last-gasp goal from Arnor Traustason earned Iceland a 2-1 win over Austria and second spot in Group F, while at the same time Portugal were drawing 3-3 against table-toppers Hungary.

Had both fixtures finished level it would have meant tournament nemesis Portugal for England but instead they face the minnows.

One look at the odds shows how relieved Hodgson must be. Bet365 make England 1-5 to qualify for the quarter-finals but that price would have been 4-6 had it been Portugal next up. Betfred are 2-9 England reach the quarter-finals.

Iceland are 100-30 to stun England, who can be backed at 8-15 with Betfred to get the job done in 90 minutes. Iceland are 8-1 with Hills.

If Coral’s betting is correct then Harry Kane will regain his starting spot for the knockout match on Monday with the Tottenham forward 1-2 to get the nod over 6-4 Jamie Vardy.

Daniel Sturridge could be considered big at 5-6 if it is a straight fight with Raheem Sterling, who is the same price to force his way into the 11.

Jack Wilshere is 4-1, Jordan Henderson can be backed at 8-1, while Wayne Rooney is 1-10 shot and Adam Lallana and Dele Alli are both 1-6.

England are 11-1 with Coral and Ladbrokes to win Euro 2016 but will be regretting not topping Group B having slipped into the bottom half of the draw alongside the three teams who were ahead of them in the ante-post betting – France, Germany and Spain – as well as Italy.

Spain, beaten 2-1 by Croatia to finish behind them in Group D, will now take on Italy in a mouthwatering prospect in the Stade de France on Monday.

The reigning champions lost favouritism and are out to 11-2 to retain the crown but they are 8-15 to overcome the Azzurri in a repeat of the 2012 European Championship final.

All of the teams in the top half of the draw, none of whom have ever been to a World Cup or Euros final, have been slashed for a maiden title with Croatia 9-1, although they will be cursing their luck at having to play Portugal in the last 16.

Portugal can be backed at 12-1 to win Euro 2016 and Cristiano Ronaldo gave his tournament top goalscorer backers a major boost with a brace in the 3-3 draw with Hungary.

Bet365 and Coral cut Ronaldo to 6-1 to be the leading marksman.
