Layers not impressed by Lambert choice

Stoke's appointment of Paul Lambert as manager did not go down well with some bookmakers to such an extent Paddy Power have paid out on the Potters to be relegated from the Premier League.

Lambert, a 100-1 shot for the job before a turbulent weekend for City when Quique Sanchez Flores and Martin O'Neill reportedly turned down the vacancy, replaces Mark Hughes and his first game will come against Huddersfield at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday.

Betfair, Hills and Power cut Stoke for relegation prior to Monday's trip to Manchester United with City best at 15-8 to go down, while BoyleSports and Sky Bet rated Lambert's new charges 1-2 to avoid the drop.

Vice chairman John Coates told Stoke's official website: "Paul has been successful in management at clubs with a strong and stable background and with local ownership – the kind of foundation we are able to give to our managers.

“We were determined to appoint someone with Premier League experience or an extensive knowledge of English football. We look forward to working with Paul and supporting him to help achieve our goals.”

Lambert started his managerial career at Livingston and has also coached Wycombe, Colchester, Norwich, Aston Villa, Blackburn and Wolves.

Ryan Giggs was named as the new Wales manager, signing a four-year contract to replace Chris Coleman.

Betfred responded by rating Giggs 2-1 to be a permanent Premier League manager at some stage having been in temporary charge previously at Manchester United, while the Red Devils legend is a 16-1 shot to replace Jose Mourinho.

Giggs is 11-10 to lead Wales to the European Championship finals in 2020 with Betway.
