Own goal ends Shrews’ hopes of giantkilling

CHELSEA were pushed hard by League Two side Shrewsbury in the Capital One Cup last-16 but the competition favourites advanced to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory.

The Blues took the lead at the start of the second half thanks to Didier Drogba but Shrewsbury equalised through Andrew Mangan.

However, an own goal by Shrews defender Jermaine Grandison broke the hearts of more than 10,000 fans packed into New Meadow – an unstoppable diving header ending hopes of an 11-1 shock. Chelsea remain 9-4 with Hills to lift the trophy.

Bournemouth, fresh from smashing eight goals past Birmingham in the Championship on Saturday, continued their fine form by beating Premier League West Brom 2-1.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe made ten changes to his team but goals from Eunan O’Kane and Callum Wilson either side of a Tommy Elphick own goal took his side into the quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history.

Derby came back from two goals down at Craven Cottage to beat Fulham 5-2. Moussa Dembele gave the home side a firm command of the game, but a Chris Martin penalty just before half-time proved to be the turning point and the Cottagers fell apart after the break.

Liverpool needed two late goals but eventually won 2-1 against Swansea at  Anfield. Marvin Emnes had put the Swans in front but substitute Mario Balotelli scored a late equaliser, and after Federico Fernandez was given a harsh red card in added time Reds defender Dejan Lovren headed a dramatic winner.

League One Sheffield United will also be in the hat for the quarter-final draw after a 2-1 victory at MK Dons.

Rangers booked their place in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over St Johnstone thanks to Lewis Macleod’s late winner.
