Portugal held to draw in group opener
EUROPEAN champions Portugal were denied victory in their opening Confederations Cup game as Hector Moreno scored an injury-time goal for Mexico to make it 2-2.
The correct score was available to back at 18-1 before kick-off while punters who sided with Portugal at 6-5 must have though they were on to a winner when Southampton’s Cedric Soares put them 2-1 up in the 86th minute.
However, centre-back Moreno, whose move from PSV Eindhoven to Roma was confirmed earlier this month, bagged the equaliser for Mexico, leaving tournament hosts Russia two points clear at the top of Group A.
Ricardo Quaresma, a 9-1 shot, had given Portugal the lead before Mexico’s Javier Hernandez made it 1-1 but Cristiano Ronaldo – 2-1 ante-post favourite to be top goalscorer – drew a blank.
