Rooney odds-on to take Three Lions armband
WAYNE ROONEY is 1-3 to be named as England's new captain after Liverpool's Steven Gerrard confirmed his retirement from international football on Monday.
Gerrard, who led England in their disappointing World Cup campaign, won 114 caps for his country although any punters who think the midfielder could be tempted back can get 8-1 with Hills that he starts any of England's Euro 2016 qualifying matches.
The betting suggests that there aren't many serious candidates to inherit the captaincy from Gerrard. Coral quote Rooney at 4-9 with Gary Cahill next in the betting at 7-2 and Joe Hart at 5-1. It's 20-1 bar those three.
Daniel Sturridge, whose emergence has threatened Rooney's status as England's main striker, is 66-1 with Coral to wear the armband for the Three Lions, who are a general 14-1 to win Euro 2016 and 22-1 for the 2018 World Cup.
