Ryan is fancied to get
the gig at Sunderland

LEEDS boss Garry Monk and former Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs were installed as the early favourites to be the new manager of Sunderland after David Moyes resigned yesterday.

Moyes walked away after the Black Cats gained just 24 points from their 38 Premier League games, a tally which left them 16 points short of safety.

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short could go for Monk, who has  experience of the Sky Bet Championship having steadied the ship at Elland Road and just failed to earn the Yorkshire outfit a playoff spot.

Giggs worked as Louis van Gaal’s assistant at Old Trafford before leaving the club when Jose Mourinho was appointed as the Dutchman’s successor last summer.

Monk was available at 9-1 with Betway, who had Giggs as favourite, while the former United winger was still available at 10-1 with Paddy Power at 5.40pm last night.

Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe is set to join Bournemouth on a free transfer.
