Spurs shocked in Europa League
TOTTENHAM failed to justify odds-on prices of 10-11 after losing 1-0 to Gent in their Europa League last-32 first-leg tie in Belgium.
Gent, who had been 4-1 shots to grab a first-leg advantage, put in a spirited performance and were rewarded with Jeremy Perbet’s second-half strike.
It could have been even better for Gent but Hugo Lloris made an outstanding save from Danijel Milicevic, the Frenchman pushing his shot on to the post as the outsiders pushed for a second.
Harry Kane also hit the woodwork for Spurs, who fielded a strong side, but they will have work to do at Wembley next week if Maurico Pochettino’s team are to continue in the Europa League.
Rostov were the most impressive winners in the early starts with a fine 4-0 victory over Sparta Prague, while fellow Russian outfit Krasnodar beat Fenerbahce 1-0.
Shakhtar Donestk were 1-0 winners away to Celta Vigo as they continued their fine Europa League form and Fiorentina will be delighted with their 1-0 triumph at Monchengladbach.
Federico Bernardeschi scored the only goal of the game in Germany, while Lyon were in rampant form at AZ Alkmaar, winning 4-1. Skipper Alexandre Lacazette scored twice for Lyon.
Ten-man Copenhagen were 2-1 winners at Ludogorets and the games at Astra Giurgiu and Olympiakos finished in draws.
