Spurs star odds-on for Euro 2016 squad spot

HE WAS playing against Yeovil in League One in May but Dele Alli is now odds-on to be in England’s squad for next summer’s European Championship.

Alli, who scored a belter to open the scoring in England’s 2-0 win over France at Wembley on Wednesday, is as short as 1-2 to be in Roy Hodgson’s travelling party and best at 4-6 with Sky Bet.

The former MK Dons midfielder has impressed in the Premier League since joining Tottenham and has now graced the international stage to firmly establish himself as a Euro 2016 squad contender.

Alli, 19, has jumped above the more experienced Michael Carrick and Fabian Delph in the betting and bet365 reacted by making the Spurs man 5-2 to start England’s first Euro 2016 match.

That shows what a rapid rise the teenager has enjoyed since he was a 10-1 shot with Betfair in September to be in England’s 23-man squad for France.

Alli was the main market mover in the squad betting with England, who will be among the top seeds for the tournament and are unchanged at 12-1 to win their first European Championship.

However, Alli could have a familiar face alongside side him on the plane with Tottenham team-mate Eric Dier also nibbled at and he is 9-4 to be in the finals squad having been 6-1 earlier this month.

Whether Hodgson is bold enough to fill his squad with youngsters remains to be seen with the coach previously perceived as a safety-first boss.

However, bet365 believe Hodgson could unleash the cubs when the Three Lions begin their Euro 2016 campaign in June.

The firm offer evens that at least seven of Wednesday’s Wembley starters (Hart, Clyne, Cahill, Stones, Gibbs, Barkley, Alli, Dier, Sterling, Kane, Rooney) are in the line-up for the first match and it’s 8-11 for six or fewer to be given the nod.

Wayne Rooney scored the second goal at Wembley and Betway make the skipper 4-11 to win the England supporters’ player of the year award for 2015.

A perfect illustration of a captain leading by example came in Copenhagen on Wednesday when Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice to help Sweden qualify for Euro 2016 at the expense of Denmark.

Sweden are 80-1 to win the Euros and fellow playoff victors Ukraine are the same price.
