Van Gaal 5-1 favourite to replace Moyes at United

LOUIS VAN GAAL is the favourite to replace David Moyes as Manchester United manager as the Scot looked to be on the verge of leaving Old Trafford on Monday evening.

Van Gaal will leave his post as Holland manager after the World Cup and Dutch media were reporting last week that the former Ajax, Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss had met with senior United officials.

Those rumours were denied by the Red Devils, although with Moyes on the brink of the United chop bookmakers have put two and two together and come up with 5-1 quotes for Van Gaal, who had been odds-on to replace Tim Sherwood at Tottenham but is now on the drift at 2-1.

Van Gaal has a number of immediate advantages in that he is available, has vast experience in European football, wants to work in England and has an excellent relationship with striker Robin van Persie, although it remains a wide-open market with Jurgen Klopp next in the betting at 6-1.

Klopp was running away with a poll on the Manchester Evening News website on Monday and appears to be the fans’ choice but those connected with German football are unsure if he would be willing to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer.

If Moyes leaves before the end of the season then Ryan Giggs would be among the front-runners to oversee team affairs for the remainder of the campaign and the United legend is 6-1 to get the nod permanently.

At the other end of the experience scale comes the retired Sir Alex Ferguson who is 16-1 for the most dramatic of returns to the dugout.

Carlos Queiroz, a former assistant to Ferguson, was the one for speculative money yesterday and is quoted at 16-1. The Iran coach was as big as 66-1 before rumours gathered pace over Moyes’s future and he was backed into as low as 11-2 at one stage.

Paddy Power are betting on Moyes’s next job and Newcastle is 3-1 from 25-1 with Celtic next at 6-1.
