Wigan 1-33 for drop after Norwich and Toon wins
WIGAN'S FA Cup celebrations were tempered by Sunday's Premier League results with relegation rivals Norwich and Newcastle both taking maximum points which were enough to guarantee their top-flight safety.
Robert Snodgrass struck the first goal to help Norwich on their way to a 4-0 victory at home to West Brom. And Newcastle came from behind to win 2-1 at QPR with a Hatem Ben Arfa penalty and a goal from Yoan Gouffran.
Southampton are also effectively safe after Jason Puncheon's second-half equaliser secured them a 1-1 draw at Sunderland.
Saints have climbed above Aston Villa on goal difference and only a defeat by 12 goals or more at home to Stoke next weekend could put them in danger.
The picture is a little more worrying for Sunderland, who may need a point at Tottenham next Sunday to stay up.
However, they are as big as 20-1 for the drop, while Wigan are no bigger than 1-33 to fall through the trap door and Villa - the only other team in peril - are 33-1 shots.
The FA Cup winners are 10-1 to score a victory at Arsenal on Tuesday that would give them a fighting chance going into their last game at home to Villa.
