Sleeping giants to serve up stalemate

I’M still coming to terms with the fact that we’ve somehow ended up with a title battle between Spurs and Leicester, but I suppose we should instead be looking forward to a clash between two sleeping giant has-beens from yesteryear.

The only competition Chelsea and Manchester United are likely to win this season is the one to decide which team plays the least interesting football.

The Blues have picked up a bit since they got rid of Mourinho but they’re still a long way from anything special, while United still seem to be earning plaudits predominantly for beating a woefully out-of-form Derby in the FA Cup.

Chelsea’s home record is uglier than the club’s planned redevelopment of Stamford Bridge, which looks like a hastily built treehouse.

So I can’t have any faith in Guus Hiddink’s side getting three points at the prices and the draw looks a solid bet. These sides played out a diabolical 0-0 draw at the end of December and I don’t believe much has changed.

Apart from, I suppose, the fact that Spurs and Leicester are now looking like the Premier League’s answer to Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Espanyol v Sociedad

Home Win Draw Away Win
Key stats
  • Espanyol have conceded 12 goals in ten home league matches – six of them against Real Madrid
Expert verdict
Espanyol were thumped 6-0 by Real Madrid last weekend – the second time this season that they've suffered that scoreline – but they are generally a tough side to beat at home, where they held Barcelona to a 0-0 draw recently. Visitors Real Sociedad have won only two away games this season, at struggling Granada and Levante, and a point apiece looks likely.
