Liverpool glory days not a labour of love for me

IT was 1992 and I was contemplating voting Labour in my first general election.

My flatmate was adamant that I should not consider it under any circumstances.

He was a few years older than me and talked about his vivid memories of the industrial strife that led to the dead not being buried and rubbish being piled up in the streets.

“Trust me, mate,” he said. “You don't want to go back to those days. Nightmare, mate. It was a complete nightmare.”

I thought about this the other day when I contemplated what life would be like if Liverpool ended their drought and won their first Premier League title this season.

I'm old enough to remember when the Reds were the best team in Europe on a regular basis.

All the people that become chastised for being glory hunters then did not support Manchester United, Chelsea (who were in the Second Division) or Manchester City.

They were Anfield loyalists.

Are we going to be able to cope with these people coming out of the woodwork?

Some people may not be old enough to remember what life was like when the Liver Birds ruled the roost.

Well I fear we are about to find out.

It should be a cracking game when Manchester City head to Merseyside on Sunday when the two best attacks in the country clash.

With all that talent on show, I'll be banking on loads of goals and I think it will be the home team celebrating in the end.

If you can't remember what life was like in the late 1970s, then buckle your seatbelts.

It could be a bumpy ride.
