European football
needs a late show

FIFTEEN live football matches. There's 15 live football matches on the telly on Sunday.

If you strang them out one after the other there would literally not be enough hours in the day to show all these matches.

But that should not stop us trying.

Of course, there's no chance that there will be less live football on our screens so we might as well get used to the fact it won't be long before Sky and BT will be helping us get stuck in to the Albanian second division or Uzbekistan Serie B.

It's a struggle but I look at the schedule and note one glaring problem with a programme that starts with PSV taking on Vitesse Arnhem at 11.30am and ends with the final whistle in Real Sociedad v Real Madrid, which should be blown at about 9.50pm.

That's 11-and-a-half hours at the beginning of the day and two hours and ten minutes at the end of the day which are not being utilised for televised live football and are consequently being wasted.

Why can't we get Bordeaux to play Bastia at three in the morning?

What could be better than watching Groningen duke it out with Ajax while we're tucking into our cornflakes.

If the World Cup taught us anything, it is that people love a game of football to watch after they come home from the pub.

Torino v Inter. Kick-off 11.20pm. Now that's got a ring to it.
