Everton edge opening Europa League tie

Everton were made to work hard before finally landing a 1-0 victory at long odds-on against Ruzomberok in their Europa League third qualifying round first-leg tie at Goodison Park.

Leighton Baines scored the only goal, via a deflection, as the Toffees, who started with the returning Wayne Rooney in the central striking position of a 4-3-3 formation, edged out the Slovakian minnows.

Aberdeen grabbed a 2-1 home win against ten-man Apollon Limassol. Ryan Christie and Graeme Shinnie were on target for the Scottish side.

Expert verdict
The Germans were not disgraced in the first leg – they enjoyed 63 per cent possession and narrowly lost the shot count 14-13 – but a trip to Anfield will be tougher. However, Hoffenheim have to go for it and they have shown they can cause Liverpool’s suspect defence plenty of problems.
