Rooney set for record-breaking opportunity

Wayne Rooney will be given the chance to claim a landmark goal after Jose Mourinho confirmed the England captain would start Manchester United’s FA Cup third-round tie against Reading at Old Trafford.

Rooney, who has missed the last three United matches due to a thigh complaint, needs one more goal to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 and he is 11-10 with BoyleSports to notch against the Royals.

A brace would see Rooney out on his own as United’s greatest ever goalscorer and the 31-year-old is 11-2 with Boyles to break the record on Saturday.

Mourinho also confirmed Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay would not be available for selection while their future was up for debate, although United have not received an offer that meets their valuation just yet.

The duo still look set to leave Old Trafford and they may well be replaced by Jose Fonte is the betting is to be believed with Hills making the wantaway Southampton skipper 2-1 to join the Red Devils in January.

Benfica are 7-4 favourites to sign Fonte, who is 9-2 to join a Chinese club, 6-1 to head to Liverpool and 12-1 for a link-up with former boss Ronald Koeman at Everton.

The 33-year-old centre-back, who was part of Portugal’s triumphant Euro 2016 squad, can be backed at 6-1 to stay at Saints after making a transfer request.
