Injury rules Cairo Prince out of Kentucky Derby

USA: Godolphin's one-time ante-post favourite Cairo Prince is injured and will miss the Kentucky Derby.

According to reports, the Holy Bull Stakes winner has injured his near-fore fetlock. "We're not sure exactly what it is," said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, speaking to the Blood-Horse. "Hopefully it will be fine and he won't need surgery and be back this summer sometime, but we'll have to see."

McLaughlin explained that the colt was stiff after a recent workout at the Palm Meadows Training Center in Florida.

"We thought it was his foot and we had been working on his foot all week and his foot got better but he really didn't get better," he said.

After a layoff, Cairo Prince was fourth in the Florida Derby. "We're hoping there's no infection, that it's all superficial," said McLaughlin. "It's too close to make the Derby. It's a very sad day - it's the toughest day of my career as a trainer.

"He's not missed a day of training since September. Hopefully we still have a horse and he's fine. I hope it's not too serious and there's no infection and we're okay for later because he's a damn nice horse."

Liverpool's title charge is unlikely to be halted at Norwich – a team they have beaten 5-2, 5-0 and 5-1 in their last three meetings. Luis Suarez has scored 11 goals in his last four games against the Canaries, who are in woeful form and may struggle to contain the rampant Reds.
