Genk can give Liverpool a stern examination

Liverpool will want to take an early grip of Champions League Group E when they travel to take on Belgian side Genk.

After they were thumped 6-2 by Salzburg on matchday one, it looked as though Genk would play the role of Group E whipping boys.

However, the Belgians recovered well to hold Liverpool’s conquerors Napoli to a goalless draw in their next Champions League outing.

Liverpool were soundly beaten 2-0 in Naples in their European opener, showing the same away-day vulnerability that has seen them lose seven of their last ten Champions League road fixtures.

The Reds’s results on their travels (five wins from seven) remain positive, though Liverpool’s attack has struggled to find its groove away from Anfield, averaging just 1.57 goals per game since August.

Liverpool may not blow Genk away on Wednesday evening and a low-scoring success looks likely.

Expert verdict
Most of Liverpool's big guns will return to face West Ham, giving them a strong chance of posting a 15th consecutive Premier League victory. Sadio Mane's injury is a blow for the leaders but they should grind out a low-scoring success over West Ham, who lost 1-0 at home to a largely second-string West Brom team on Saturday.
