Carver slashed for permanent Toon role
NEWCASTLE are in no rush to appoint a new permanent manager and that may be good news for their caretaker boss John Carver, who has replaced Remi Garde as favourite to fill the St James’ Park hotseat.
Carver has presided over a three-match losing run which has ended Newcastle’s involvement in the FA Cup and seen them drop into the bottom half of the Premier League but he has been cut to 2-1 to be the permanent successor to Alan Pardew, while Garde – odds-on favourite at one time – has been eased to 7-2.
Derby manager Steve McClaren has distanced himself from the role but continues to attract support and is a 9-2 chance.
Newcastle’s managing director Lee Charnley admits the search could continue beyond the end of the season. He said: “If I have to wait until the summer for what I believe is the right individual, then I would rather wait.”
West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace has insisted that star striker Saido Berahino is not for sale.
Ladbrokes bet on which club will hold Berahino’s registration after the transfer window and make West Brom 1-2 favourites and Liverpool 11-8 shots.
