Klinsmann new favourite for England vacancy

GERMANY versus Italy will bring back painful memories for Jurgen Klinsmann who was in charge of Die Mannschaft for their heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat to the Azzurri in Dortmund in 2006 but he may soon be mixing it again with Europe’s finest if the betting is correct as the USA manager is the new favourite to become England’s next boss.

Klinsmann, relatively unconsidered at 25-1 when Roy Hodgson resigned on Monday, is as short as 7-2 and a best-priced 11-2 with Betfair and Coral to get the England job with Glenn Hoddle next on the list at 8-1 with bet365.

“Klinsmann’s name has appeared on more betting slips than any other potential candidate over the last 48 hours,” said Coral’s John Hill and that was backed up by Joe Crilly of Hills, who added: “Most of the money that we have taken over the last few days has been for Klinsmann and he appears to have stolen a march over his rivals for the job.”

Klinsmann is known for being passionate on the sidelines and getting his teams to play with bundles of energy but most critics accuse him of being found wanting when it comes to tactics with current German gaffer Joachim Low the brains behind the brawn in 2006.

Germany have kept clean sheets in all four Euro 2016 fixtures and bet365 rate them 20-1 to claim the continental crown without conceding in France this summer ahead of their quarter-final clash with their tournament nemesis Italy.

The Azzurri have never lost to the Germans in eight previous tournament matches and are 6-4 with Hills to extend that run to nine, while Low’s men are 6-10 to reach the semi-finals.

Portugal were the first team through to the semi-finals after beating Poland in a penalty shootout on Thursday and they are 5-1 to win the European Championship.

Impressive teenager Renato Sanches, who equalised after Robert Lewandowski’s opener and also scored his penalty, was cut to 33-1 by Sky Bet to be named as the player of the tournament with misfiring Cristiano Ronaldo out to 10-1.

Poland, 50-1 pokes at the outset, can be proud of their efforts in reaching the quarter-finals and anyone who backed them with bet365 had the consolation of seeing their cash returned as part of their ongoing penalty payback concession.

The firm said they returned £217,600 to Poland punters.
