The Premier League weekend in numbers
The Premier League administered another concentrated dose of unpredictable action at the weekend, leaving supporters breathless after another round of frenetic top-flight fixtures.
In the pick of Saturday’s results, Liverpool left it late to maintain their perfect start to the campaign against Leicester, Spurs’ capitulation continued in a south coast Brighton battering, while Aston Villa hit Norwich for five in a clash between two of the Premier League’s recent promotees.
On Sunday, Wolves turned Manchester City over at the Etihad in a result that could have serious title race ramifications, Newcastle beat Man Utd 1-0 in what felt like an attritional relegation scrap, while Chelsea’s youngsters stole the show at Southampton.

2 - The number of shots on target Wolves managed to hit against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Adama Traore hit both of Wanderers’ accurate attempts, and both attempts beat Ederson in the Citizens’ goal.
3 – The number of defensive metrics topped by Watford defender Christian Kabasele in the Hornets’ 0-0 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday. Kabesele made more successful tackles (5), completed more clearances (eight) and made more interceptions (five) than any other player involved at Vicarage Road.
5 - The number fouls committed by Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante in the Blues’ emphatic 4-1 win at Southampton. The French World Cup winner somehow avoided a booking at St. Mary’s Stadium despite his shin-pad splintering spree.
6 – The number of times Bournemouth fullback Diego Rico was dribbled past in the Cherries’ 0-1 reverse at Arsenal. The Spaniard put in his worst shift of the season so far at the Emirates, and no other Premier League player was left eating dust more often at the weekend.
9 – Manchester United’s Premier League points total after eight rounds of fixtures. That’s their lowest points tally after eight games since 1989.
11 – The percentage of Manchester City’s 18 shots against Wolves that were on target. On an unusually profligate afternoon for the champions, they tested Wanderers’ keeper Rui Patricio only twice.
15 – The number of touches of the ball racked up by Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin before he was withdrawn after 75 minutes at Turf Moor. No other Premier League player touched the ball less often at the weekend.
28 – The number of points dropped by Tottenham Hotspur out of a possible 30 in their last 10 Premier League away fixtures. Spurs’ 0-3 defeat to Brighton was their eight loss in the league on the road since February.
48 – The number of passes for every one shot taken by Manchester United in their harrowing 1-0 loss at Newcastle on Sunday. In comparison, the Magpies mustered an attempt for every 22 passes in response.
62 – The staggering number of aerial duels contested by Burnley and Everton players in the teams’ skirmish at Turf Moor on Saturday. The Clarets’ eventual 1-0 triumph certainly wasn’t one for the purists.
