13/1 Accumulator Reasoning
Preston v Sunderland
48 hours after Ryan Lowe departs from Preston they have a midweek cup fixture against one of the playoff contenders in the division. Sunderland beat a similar side in Cardiff in their season opener and I think they have a much better, younger squad than Preston. There is too much chaos going on at Preston to be able to want to back them in this spot.
Watford v MK Dons
We wrote in our preseason 1-24 predictions that Watford are a side with a squad worthy of relegation from the Championship. They did score three in their opening day trip to Millwall but only created 1.12 xG and allowed Millwall to create 2.00. I don't believe they have the squad to be this short against an MK Dons side that are red hot favourites for League Two.
Norwich v Stevenage
Norwich lost Sara over the summer and will be without Jonathan Rowe again, which is a huge void to fill. They were atrocious in their league opener to newly promoted Oxford and I want to take them on with a Stevenage side that have qualified from the first round of this competition in each of the last three years. The Canaries have won just one game in normal time in their last five first round EFL Cup ties.
Sheffield Utd v Wrexham
Sheffield United showed the quality they still have in their squad with a comfortable win at Preston in their opening game on Friday night. The gap in quality should be too big here between a side relegated from the Premier League and a side just promoted from League Two, who didn't even win the league. 7/10 seems too big of a price about the Blades.
23/1 BTTS Accumulator Reasoning
Bolton v Mansfield
Mansfield were really well backed in their season opener at Barnsley and they can find the back of the net against one of the promotion favourites in the division. Bolton found the back of the net in 23 of their 24 home games in League One last season.
Charlton v Birmingham
Birmingham looked really sluggish in their season opener against Reading and were lucky to come away with a draw. Charlton scored in 20 of 24 home games in League One a goal for the home side should open this game up.
Norwich v Stevenage
Norwich started a centre back pairing of Shane Duffy and Grant Hanley in their 2-0 loss against Oxford on Saturday. Stevenage scored in 74% of their away games last season and have scored in each of their last 10 EFL Cup ties.
Fleetwood v WBA
We think of West Brom as a very solid defensive unit but they have extreme home/away splits for goals conceded. 0.74 at home last season vs. 1.30 away from home and just six clean sheets in the league on the road. The Baggies have also conceded in each of their last ten away EFL Cup games.
Crawley v Swindon
Both meetings between these two sides had goals in last season with a 6-0 and 3-1. Both sides also saw both teams score in their opening game of the season. Swindon saw both teams to score land in 74% of their away games last season, Crawley 65% of their home games.
Stockport v Blackburn
Blackburn conceded in each of their ten games home and away against the sides in the bottom six of the Championship last season. They conceded two at home to Derby in their season opener and a good attacking Stockport side can have success against them.
